There are a couple of types of winches on the market. For general off-road vehicles, you'll find electric and hydraulic winches. But for ATVs, you really only need to look at electric winches.

The motor of small electric ATV winches provides power to a set of gears called a gear set. There are two types of gear sets for electric winches: planetary and worm gears. A planetary gear set uses several gears to turn the drum of the winch. It causes the drum to turn quickly, which translates into faster rope pulling speeds. It also generates heat. Worm gear systems have only two gears. They turn the drum more slowly than planetary gearing systems and do not generate as much heat. While worm gear drives may be slower than planetary gear drives, they also tend to be more powerful.
