When deciding what winch is best for your Jeep, one of the important things you need to decide is what size Jeep rear winch to get. Obviously, the heavier the vehicle, the stronger the winch you will need in order to pull yourself out of a bad situation. A good rule of thumb is that your winch should be at least 1.5 times the weight of your Jeep. If your Jeep is stock except for the winch you're adding, you can just multiply your gross vehicle weight (GVW) by 1.5.

However, if you've done various modifications such as lifts, bumpers, wheels, tires, or anything else, you should factor in your GVW and the weight of the modifications you've done before multiplying by 1.5.
